CSA Mutual Fund Risk Classification Methodology for Use in Fund Facts and ETF Facts

On December 8, 2016, the Canadian Securities Administrators (“CSA”) issued CSA Notice of Amendments to National Instrument 81-102 Investment Funds and Related Consequential Amendments.

The amendments mandate a standardized risk classification methodology for use by fund managers in the Fund Facts and Exchange-Traded Fund (“ETF”) Facts documents. As of September 1, 2017, the investment risk level of conventional mutual funds and exchange-traded mutual funds must be determined by using the CSA’s methodology for each filing of a Fund Facts or ETF Facts, and at least annually.

The CSA developed the methodology in response to stakeholder feedback that it has received throughout the implementation of the point of sale disclosure framework for mutual funds and ETFs.
